The abode of the angels

It was half past seven when I landed up in the dreamland known to the world for its torrential downpours - Cherapunji. Being the month of April 2013 it was a perfect blend of the icy fangs of Himalayan cold and the atrocity of summer's Loo - indeed an apt season for tourists.

Indian Railway service is the most widespread and extends its dominion in every possible nook and corner of the nation. I boarded the train and headed for Cherapunji. As I stepped into its heart the vivid imagery almost blinded me! The freshness of the milieu, the coolnes of the breeze, the gentle warmth of the sunrays, the lush green landscapes was simply enthralling! In the lap of Mother Nature was peace ineffable!

Being a tourist centre I must elicit places of attraction. A perennial stream west of the Khasi hills due 4KM from the heart of the town is a must visit. The gurgling of the sweet water lifts our spirits. Garo and Jaintiya hills are the best of the hill-stations that I've ever visited with adequate lodging facilities and hygienic food. However the terrain being rocky and the topography uneven the transport services hardly pass muster. Moving from place to place is an uphill task in this hilly region! The hotels are quite welcoming, with affordable rates. Modern facilities and a decent standard of comfort zone. It also must be said that the local folks are humble and sympathetic towards 'strangers of the neighborhood." We also find a theatre with an average of three shows per day. Just in its vicinity there's a market flooded by handicrafts of all forms, complexities, sizes and prices. The plethora leaves its visitors awe-struck! Such is the glory of this little heavenly place!
